Coming up this weekend is one of my favorite weekends of the year in downtown Frederick, MD. This weekend is the annual Fire and Ice First Saturday! You will want to brave the cold for this exciting event.
What is First Saturday?
Every first Saturday of the month Downtown Frederick Partnership puts on a themed event. The local art galleries usually have opening receptions and stores stay open late for patrons to enjoy. There are also many activities and performances that go on along the sidewalks. Each month has a different theme and many of the stores join in to add their flair and special touches.
Fire and Ice
Every year in February the Fire and Ice First Saturday takes place. This is my favorite First Saturday event of the year! The sidewalks get lined with ice sculptures, live performances take place, and there are lots of goodies to find. Many ice sculptures are now set up along Carroll Creek as well as in front of stores and restaurants throughout town. This year I read there will also be an “Ice Bar” set up at the Carroll Creek amphitheater with local wineries and
breweries. You can usually
find a Champagne Luge outside of The Wine Kitchen on the creek, the
one pictured below is from a couple of years ago.
To add some fire to the event, check out the fire dance performance. This year it will take place from 7:30-8:30 at 40
South Market Street. You can also find bonfire pits set up throughout downtown to stay warm by and sometimes roast some marshmallows!
An Event for the Whole Family
Downtown Frederick is a very family and dog oriented city. The First Saturdays always have activities for people of all ages and many of the stores allow your four-legged family members in also. Fire and Ice has a Children’s Ice Playground which you can find at the Everedy Square Plaza this year. Every First Saturday a free trolley runs throughout downtown and you can hop on and off at a few different locations. Be sure to catch the live ice carving that takes place in front of Brewers Alley on North Market Street from 5-8pm. To find out more information about this exciting event check out this link.
I hope you get a chance to check out Fire and Ice First Saturday in downtown Frederick, MD. It is a great event and supports all of our downtown Frederick businesses!
